Area III AGEHR's E-newsletter

This edition features the classes to be offered at the three upcoming Spring Festival conferences in Area III - each is listed below with the dates and location - and the classes planned for that event. For more information on any of these Festivals - go to areaiii.org and click on "events." If you have not prepared the music for the massed ringing at the Festivals, you may register for "classes only."

In this issue: A Listing of All Classes and Faculty for the Area III 2006 Festival Conferences

All classes are for ringers and directors. Read descriptions carefully for ringing level, topic focus and any extra equipment needed. Please bring gloves, music notebooks, mallets to all ringing class. Some classes use Festival music - bring your own scores for these!! Repertoire Classes feature 10-15 pieces to sight-read and ring. Note that many classes run concurrently, so you will have to pick and choose which to attend once on site.

Bells and Chimes Repertoire - Lynn Bogovich:
Work on improving your skills with the juggling of bells and chimes as you read through repertoire.

Getting a Handle on the Basics - Terri Brown:
This is where it begins. Beginning ringers and directors can "get a handle" on learning the basic bell techniques.

Recorder for the Novice - Joanne Carrico:
For those who have never played a recorder. Recorders will be available to purchase.

Beginning Recorder - Joanne Carrico:
For those who have played a recorder or other wind instrument. Bring your recorder or purchase one on site.

Open Discussion: The First Year - Carol Coughenour:
This class will cover a variety of topics for beginning ringers and directors to share.

Bells and Brass Repertoire - Carol Coughenour:
Add brass to your repertoire! Read through several pieces that include brass parts.

Bells and C Instruments Repertoire - Kerry Dietz:
Play through a variety of handbell literature that includes parts for C instruments.

Bells and Keyboard Repertoire - Kerry Dietz:
Play through a variety of handbell music that includes parts for keyboard.

Fun with Rhythm and Movement - Michael Joy:
Explore beat, meter, and rhythm through a variety of games and activities.

From Start to Finish - Michael Joy:
Taking 1-2 pieces, the instructor will go through the entire learning process to include rehearsal techniques, rote learning, unison exercises, etc.

Bucket Banging: Beyond the Basics - Paul Kingsbury:
Learn and apply advanced ringing techniques with the largest bells.

Case Studies in Advanced Bass Ringing - Paul Kingsbury:
Examine a number of specific challenges for bass ringers.

Ring and Sing: Bells and Voices Repertoire - Zana Kizzee:
Repertoire and suggestions for combining bells and voices.

Ringing the African American Song - Zana Kizzee:
A focus on the African American Spiritual arrangements for handbell literature.

We've 3 bells--now what? - Bobbi Schmid:
This class has a focus on the ever important skill called "weaving". Practice and coaching will be available.

SOS: Trebles in Trouble - Bobbi Schmid:
Multiple bell techniques including shelly and four-in-hand will be the focus. Balancing chimes and bells will be another feature.

Open Discussion: Building a Program - Ann Schmidt:
Bring your ideas, concerns and questions to share with others.

Who Plays What? - Ann Schmidt:
This is a bell assignment class where we will talk about the "rules" and look at ways to modify when necessary.

First Timers Meeting - Fran Vaughan

This repertoire class highlights new releases from some of the smaller, lesser-known publishers - featuring a variety of pieces from ensemble to 5 octaves, easy to advanced.

Refining Ringing Techniques - Carol Hunter
Warm up for the Festival music with some focused technique work. Tools for self-evaluation included.

Learning Styles - Charm Peterman
Come explore elements on whole-brain learning and discover some ways bilateral functionality can be a positive factor in ringing handbells.

Conducting 101: What They See Is What You Get - Agnes French
Beginnings, endings and everything in between! A good introduction for beginning directors and a good brush-up for experienced directors. Bring a baton if you have one, and your music notebooks/stands.

Explore the muscular challenges faced in ringing, especially when the muscles try to "take over." Please bring your festival music to this class!

Problem Solving in Music Rehearsals - Carol Hunter
What problems are you confronted with during rehearsals? This class will explore possible solutions to problems of a non-musical nature.

Refining Ringing Techniques - Carol Hunter
Ringers, come review the basics and improve your contribution to your choir. Tools for self-evaluation included.

Elementary Elements of Ensembles - Anacrusis Handbell Ensemble
This class is designed for BEGINNING-TO-INTERMEDIATE Ensemble Ringers.
-Please bring 2 MALLETS and FOUR (4) BELLS from within C6-C8 in ascending sequence (such as F6, F#6, G6 and G#6 - or - A7, A#7, B7 and C8)

Beyond the Elements - Anacrusis Handbell Ensemble
This class is designed for INTERMEDIATE-TO-ADVANCED Ensemble Ringers.
-Please bring 2 MALLETS and FOUR (4) or SIX (6) BELLS from within C6è C8 in ascending sequence (such as E6, F6, F#6 and G6 - or - F7,F#7, G7,G#7, A7 and A#7.)

Connecting the Dots: Making Music from Black Dots on White Paper - Agnes French
This class will focus on playing our favorite percussion instruments, namely "Handbells," musically.

Bass Bells - Advanced - Lois Hofmann
This class will cover many aspects of advanced bass bell ringing techniques and warm-up exercises.

Bass bells - Basic Skills - Lois Hofmann
This class will introduce various aspects of bass bell ringing (the lower 4th and 5th octave bells - C3 through B3.) Detailed handouts will be supplied.

Dottie's Dots! - Demystifying Dotted Rhythms - Dottie Tweedie
Ah! - Behold the power of the dot! Just what does it mean when it comes to counting and rhythm?

S t r e t c h i n g Your Music - Dottie Tweedie
This class will explore new ways to add variety and spice to a piece you already have. Bring gloves, bell notebooks, mallets and pencils!

Fun with Rhythm and Movement-Linda Simms
Put the beat in your feet and let's move! Participants in this class will explore and experience rhythm with the use of tennis balls and movement.

Score Study - David Tiller
Sight-reading is funÉonce! Then it's time to prepare our music beyond the sticks and dots on the page. Bring your Festival music, please. No ringing is involved.

Boomwackers! - Nancy Cappel
Bring your sense of humor! The class is the same as years before--always lots of fun with a crazy instrument! Everybody rings...er...wacks!!

This class will present repertoire and suggestions for you to successfully combine bells and voices.

Repertoire: Short and Sweet - Nancy Cappel
Musical gems wrapped in small packages! We'll ring through shorter pieces for shorter times in the service!

Repertoire: Bells and C Instruments - Linda Simms
Expand your repertoire and spice it up by adding other instruments! The music used in this class includes the possible addition of violin, flute, recorder, oboe, keyboard or chimes.
